Fred,
You'll definitely have to take the notebook apart to get at the
audio jack. If the jack is shorting the L & R pins together to
give you mono, it's probably quite loose at this point and will have to
be de-soldered from the board and replaced but I hope that the actual
board traces aren't broken! If you've never soldered a mainboard
before, take it REAL easy and don't generate any excessive heat while
doing it! You might want to use some Solder-Wick to suck up the excess
solder so that the jack will fall away from the board easily after
de-soldering. Just clean up any mess after you're done.
I expect that the jack is a standard square plastic-cased jack (one
hopes...) which you can pick up at Lee's Electronics on Main Street
& 28th Ave., (if you're in Vancouver) or possibly at Main
Electronics, a few doors to the south of Lee's. It shouldn't cost more
than a few dollars and they'll probably sell them in packs of 2 and to
be safe, be sure to take the jack into the store so that they can see
it and match it up properly.
Good Luck

Have you taken the laptop apart and looked at it? Often it is just the
solder connection to the jack that causes the intermittent audio and
resoldering the jack is all that is need to repair the problem.

I was wondering if anyone has any advice for replacing the audio jack
on an Acer laptop, or other hacks that may allow it to work correctly.
The problem is the plug has grown loose with wear and the audio cuts
in and out from stereo to mono.
Any advice is appreciated everything from sourcing / identifying the
connector to desoldering / soldering it. Alternatively, there are
three other jacks on the laptop so rerouting the signal either via
software or hardware is also an option if it would prove easier.
It's an Acer Aspire 6935 on the off chance that someone knows the part I
need.
