For anyone who's new to the list, this Tuesday night is el wire hack
night. Deets and original post below.
Yes! El wire night is on!
For those who aren't familiar with it, el wire is electroluminescent
wire: PVC-coated phosphorescent wire that lights up along its full
length when plugged into a driver. When lit up, it looks a bit like a
neon sign (for radness, see: http://hacknmod.com/hack/create
oustanding-lighting-effects-el-wire/ ), BUT it's flexible, portable,
and reusable, so you can use it to decorate banners, bikes, clothes,
hats, shoes, cars, doorways, musical instruments... anything really.
And when you get sick of whatever you've made, you can strip the el
wire out of it and make something new.
For those coming to Burning Man this year, making some el wire gear is
a great way to avoid spending your playa nights as a darkwad, also
known as speed bump, or roadkill.
Details:
Tuesday, May 4th, 7pm. At vhs 2.0.
There will be at least two experienced el wirers on hand to help with
any questions, plus an assortment of el wire projects for inspiration.
If you already have something el wired to show off, by all means
bring it. Show and tell, perhaps? Other shiny and blinky things are
also welcome.
For anyone looking to stock up on el wire, I recommend
http://coolneon.com/ . They're friends of friends, their prices are
good, they're in California, they ship orders promptly, and they're
generally great to deal with. You can also try your luck on ebay.
Lee's electronics has el wire supplies as well, though word is that
it's pricier than buying online.
