If you are going to weld you should build a welding booth. Walls and floor
should not be flammable. You can get cement board in 4x8 sheets that would
work OK. You should also have ventilation. Welding can generate nasty
fumes and burning acetylene generates a black soot that gets everywhere.
Smoke alarms can be an issue and you should check with your insurance too.
Acetylene leaks can make a big bang. In general with OA welding you should
know what you are doing with pressure, flashback arrestors etc. or any
number of things can go impressively wrong. The rate that you can draw
acetylene from a cylinder depends on its cross section. A B cylinder
won't generate enough acetylene for most cutting as it does not have a
large enough area. If you try to pull too much acetylene out you will
start drawing the acetone that the acetylene is desolved in. You would be
better off using propane for cutting (a BBQ tank) as you will get enough
gas and it is much cheaper. Propane will work with acetylene tips although
a propane tip will work better.
OA can be fun if done safely. If you go ahead I would be happy to help
with a tutorial. I could do one on TIG or plasma cutting too.
