The slag would leave big scars, yes. A canvas dropcloth won't cut it.
You can drop a sheet of plywood though, and as long as you're careful
to blow slag straight down it'd work, but it means keeping a sheet of
plywood around (honestly not the worst idea, if folks are
anglegrinding or using the MIG rig).
