That's actually not the antiquated one. That's the one coined by
clueless "reporters"[1] that consider that "DIYing" a computer is a
criminal activity... because criminal computer activity is often
achieved through similar means.

Think about calling a mechanics a car thief because he know how the car 
works and how to bypass keyed ignition and other stuff... or how to 
unlock doors without the key.

Or calling a locksmith a burgler for the same reasons.

And yes hacking also applies to hardware.

[1] fact checking and proper lexicon in reporting / journalism is
something that has been lost for a while. and new technology made it
worse because it show how much these people don't even know what they
talk about.
