Hey John. Those kits looks pretty rad. I'd be into hearing about it. I
was considering getting one too, and then I realized I have a
propeller board and a bunch of arduino's I don't use very much and
probably shouldn't buy more toys. That being said my cart is full for
sparkfun free day tomorrow.
As far as your tip goes 25w should be pretty manageable. Although it
does depend on the iron. I don't think the flux would be doing it,
unless you're using an acid activated flux, which from what I've heard
isn't an ideal choice for hobby use because of corrosion issues. I
find the fastest way to kill a tip is to not keep it tinned. Just
always leave a gob of solder on it and they should last a lot longer.
