I actually built a small jewelry sized throbber with a small atmel chip and
a solarbotics cell. With careful circuit design you can get pretty low power
out of a MCU. Certainly a LOT lower than a 55x series timer. Nicer fade
effects too ;) There are rechargeable button cells out there...
