A friend of mine pointed me at this, a DIY digital oscilloscope for $33 (USD):

He also owned an analyzer called a snap on vantage. Version 6 and up
has a dual trace labscope. When they went from b&w to colour, places
were throwing theirs out or selling them dirt cheap. If you've ever
seen one of these in the hands of someone who can really use it, well,
they're pretty astounding. So if any of you mighty scavenger types is
talking to a mechanic or at a garage or in a bin, and one of these
comes up for $200 or less... it's worth it.
