Perhaps while people are in the space they could try to keep an eye on
the IRC channel from time to time? Automating it with a motion sensor
updating a timestamp would be nifty, but might be slightly less
reliable (and couldn't be asked if people would be there another half
hour, for example), and manually updating something would eventually
lead to someone forgetting to update it as empty upon leaving, and
people at the door when nobody's inside.
