Hey all,
I mentioned this meeting at VHS on Tuesday. VONIC is a nonprofit,
consensus-based community wifi cooperative. It has ownership of the
FreeTheNet.ca wireless mesh network, which provides open internet access at
various places around town. We're using open-source firmware on the
routers (improved and customized for this project by Joe) and an
open-source Rails app to provide a web interface and captive portal
(written by Joe).
The project has been pretty dormant for the past few months, but there are
some good opportunities for things like installing open wifi networks in
low-income housing co-ops. The biggest thing that's missing right now is
people with technical knowledge to help out with installation and testing
and to make sure the hardware and software keeps working properly.
If you're interested in the idea of community wireless -- hacking routers,
installing local wifi networks, or whatever -- please consider coming down
to the meeting on Monday night.
Jeff
