Hey

I apologize for not being able to report on this earlier, but today we
looked at the space in the Mergatroid Building. It's currently 1500
square feet at $1400 monthly. They want a two year lease, and here's
the following details:

Pros:
- - 3 Phase Power
- - Shared Loading Bay/Dock
- - Exhaust Fan
- - Hardwood Floors
- - Ability to customize the locks to the space
- - Good location (Located less than 2 blocks away from Strathcona Park)
- - Good Landlord
- - Good Neighbours

Cons:
- - Mezzanine area is another suite. An artist above us will need to go
through the space to access their suite.
- - No kitchen space
- - No shower
- - Shared bathroom

This is the old home of the Parker Street Woodworking Cooperative, and
they currently do woodwork in this space. It's a long and somewhat
narrow space, and we may be able to put in one or two rooms, but nothing
much more than that. Zoning is I2, which is Industrial use, so we would
be going to City Hall with a Business Licence of a Controlled Workshop
space if we were to enter this building.

The reason I'm mentioning this on the list is that we are so close to
having the hackerspace really take off. We have new people come in
every week, and we need people who want to help underwrite the start-up
costs of the space, namely by paying for memberships in advance. We are
in a better position now than we were over a month ago, when we looked
at the last potential space, and I feel that we're better equipped now
as a society to bring VHS up to the level of a fully-functioning
hackerspace in Vancouver.

Right now, we're a third of where we need to be to kickstart this
hackerspace, as far as us being able to cover our first three months of
rent. If you're interested in joining VHS, or you're interested in
putting down money in advance so that we can launch, please let me know.
We're really close to being able to do this.

I'll be getting pics up on toad either later tonight or tomorrow morning
so people can get another look, and I'm going to try to get some other
regulars together to check out the space again. If you're interested,
please let me know.

Thanks

Joe
