[Vanhackspace] Replace 1/8" audio jack on laptop

Fred,
You'll definitely have to take the notebook apart to get at the
audio jack. If the jack is shorting the L & R pins together to give you
mono, it's probably quite loose at this point and will have to be
de-soldered from the board and replaced but I hope that the actual board
traces aren't broken! If you've never soldered a mainboard before,
take it REAL easy and don't generate any excessive heat while doing it!
You might want to use some Solder-Wick to suck up the excess solder so
that the jack will fall away from the board easily after de-soldering.
Just clean up any mess after you're done.
I expect that the jack is a standard square plastic-cased jack (one
hopes...) which you can pick up at Lee's Electronics on Main Street &
28th Ave., (if you're in Vancouver) or possibly at Main Electronics, a
few doors to the south of Lee's. It shouldn't cost more than a few
dollars and they'll probably sell them in packs of 2 and to be safe, be
sure to take the jack into the store so that they can see it and match
it up properly.

Good Luck
David Eaman
