Freegeek is pretty safe. ;-)

Lots of people buy off craigslist. Quite a few of the "new, in box" machines
are bought from loss-leader sales then resold for a profit (eg. NCIX sold
about 20 $100 701SD EEEs a few weeks ago, and newegg, woot and elsewhere
will occasionally have similar deals). If you do buy off of Craigslist, you
should probably show up and make sure that the hardware is all correct for
whatever model, that the screen works and it boots etc. etc. etc. Caveat
emptor and all that, but if you ensure it works before you buy it then odds
are it'll keep working once you get it home/to VHS/wherever. Note that a
shrinkwrapped box doesn't necessarily have a working machine inside, as it's
not all that hard to get access to a shrinkwrapper.
